Newcastle's loss is Blackburn's gain

Blackburn Rovers, little more than relegation battlers at the start of the season, have clinched a place in Europe next season. This is their reward in a season where they have transformed themselves from rough, physical grinders to a team playing intelligent, attractive football. The couch potato pundit investigates.

I suppose we can point to 2 key issues which sparked this season of success. Souness to Newcastle, Bellamy to Blackburn.

Mark Hughes, the former Man U great, was given the task of saving the club from a relegation battle and save them he did. He transformed them from a team of thugs to one that actually plays good football. Heck, even Robbie Savage is curling in free kicks!

Players like Reid, the Norweigan Pedersen and goalie Friedel have played big parts in their revival but none more so than Craig Bellamy. Bellamy was a player whose bark was always worse than his bite. Always whining and complaining, there was never any end product to show for all his talents. That was to change as he scored a succession of goals worthy of any stage as he finally found finishes to match his fearsome pace. 13 league goals for a player blighted by injury is a very good return.

How Newcastle fans must be wishing they still had him. I know i do.

Next Match : vs Manchester City (home)

True Lies : Liverpool to sign Bellamy in the summer?
